Joe, your concerns are very valid. Be assured that public safety is paramount to us. Please keep in mind that public safety isn’t just about money. It’s about management, leadership and the efficient use of resources. Right now, Fire Department is hemorrhaging money. They are over budget by $4.7 million. Are we more safe now than when they were at or under budget? At some point, the citizens have to say enough is enough.

Bryce, The Fire Department is already boycotting businesses and telling others to do so. No need to harm any other businesses in this process. This is why most people will not stand up to the excesses of special interest groups.

I think that if a “club” is going to start attacking another group of people, it should have the respect to identify itself. unless you are willing to name your other “respected members” of the omaha community who are within your ranks, you have no credibility. for all the we know, you could be acting alone with some personal agenda. though i consider myself neutral here, for the most part, i do see one big problem. the men of the fire department are a public group. they walk among us everyday. we see them on the street. if we have questions, we can speak to them. but nobody knows any of the members of your group, because they have yet to be named. it seems spineless.

I read the article in the OWH this morning, and I think you guys are on the right track. Both the police and ff unions seem to have no concept of where the money comes from.

Good work on the Fire Department. Why are you not putting equal pressure on the Police Department and its union with the outrageous “spiking” of retirement benefits going on. Let’s face it, the era of 20 retirement has got to stop. More years of service in all areas of public service before retirement is essential to the welfare of the public as a whole.
